Doors open at 7:00 for 8:00 start till 11:00(ish)
£4 entry (£3 performers) just £2 for under 25s
(These nights subsidise the “Concert nights” which don’t always pay their way.)
It is hosted by Mark Gamon, Chris Walls or Martin Kaszak
Spots on this night are highly coveted and book up about three months in advance. This is a night for musicians to introduce themselves to Royston Folk Club, to try new songs, new instruments, new collaborations etc. In a friendly, generous, appreciative atmosphere. It is also a great night to meet friends and to network with folk that love folk (and blues and contemporary songwriting etc etc). We are getting a good, substantial crowd of regulars and new folk join our audience every month.
GENRES OF MUSIC
We love a musical mix at the club that is eclectic and entertaining. As Tony Buch said “For folk music read GOOD music” … Hence folk both trad and contemporary are featured in the diary and welcomed at the ‘Showcase’ nights as are: blues, blue grass, singer songwriters, instrumentalists and even a foot stomping folk dance band. In fact if it is acoustic and good your welcome and an electric bass or an evenly tempered electric guitar wont get turned away. Specially if your name is Martyn Hewitt (that used to read Mark Knopfler – before I knew better … LOL).
We expect silence during concerts in the ‘Ball Room’ on the “Last Friday of every month” and believe it good etiquette to wait for gaps between songs to get drinks etc. On ‘Showcase’ nights in the ‘Oak Room’ on the “Second Friday of every month” things are a little more casual. Respect for the performer and enjoyment of the music is our priority. The room is set up so that you can circulate and wet your whistle at the bar in the corner of the room.
This room has its own bar with many bottled beers and Fosters, Stella and Guiness on tap and of course all the wines and spirits. There is a wider range of Real Ales at the main bar just across the yard or through the Ball Room
VIDEO & PICTURES
As you can see our stage is quite a good location for a video or photo. If you contact Chris Walls we can make sure we can video your showcase and give you a FREE video. If we take pictures and put them up on Facebook you can always ask for a higher res version for your use.
PLEASE BOOK A SPOT
To avoid disappointment we ask you to Mark Gamon to book a spot for the open mic night, as we have found that there is a wealth of talented singers and musicians wanting to perform and it can be hard to fit every one in. For Marks Gamon’s contact details see our Contact page.
Each solo performer or duo is offered a two song spot before the break and two song spot after the break. Larger groups are offered up to a 4 song spot in the second half of the evening.
We have been SO impressed by the quality of the performers at our open mic nights. Many have now gone on to perform a 50min paid support slot in our main concerts along side headliners on the last Friday of every month.
SOUND SYSTEM & GEEKY STUFF from Chris …
I am happy to say that the feedback, (no pun intended) is that you get nice sound at Royston Folk Club …
“Its not about ampyfing you – I aim to do my best to get a real nice sound for you by enhancing, where need be, and balancing your voices and your instruments to get your natural sound over to the whole room – as one would while recording you.” Chris
Our main desk is an 8 channel Soundcraft EFX with reverb effects .
We can add 16 channels using our Studiomaster mixing desk.
On Showcase nights we usually just use one of our carpeted 8′ x 4′ x 1′ stage, but on our first ever ‘open mic’ we did get a 6 piece on stage – OK the drummer was just off the stage).
